compound light microscopes? (LMs)

Microscopes first used by Renaissance scientists. visible light is passed through the specimen and then through glass lenses. The lenses refract the light in a such a way that the image of the specimen is magnified as it is projected into the eye, onto photograph film, or ont a video screen. Advantage: can magnify effectively to about 1000 times the size of the actual specimen. Disadvantage: The light microscope cannot resolve detail finer than about .2 micrometers.
