Important functional group of organic compounds

Structure: When an oxygen is double bonded to carbon and a hydroxyl group is bonded to a carbon. ( -COOH)

Name of Compounds: Carboxylic acids, or organic acids ex: acetic acid

Properties: covlanet bond bewteen oxygen and hydrogen is so polar that the H ion on hydroxyl will tend to dissociate reversibly.

- when these are found in the ionic form within cells, they are called carboxylate group

-bears acidic properties due to its function as a source of hydrogen ions.
